Van Gaal, 66, has been out of work since his sacking by Manchester United after winning the FA Cup in 2016.

Before his two years at Old Trafford, he took Holland to third place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and is keen on the short-term post worth around £1m.

Former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is another candidate alongside Roberto Mancini and Bert van Marwijk who was in charge of Holland for four years before van Gaal.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold has ruled himself out of the running.
